Bastian's professional home is mechanical engineering. He held various management positions at Bystronic AG. As Head of Innovation and Patent Management, he reorganised the entire innovation process and introduced a technology and trend radar as well as dedicated technology portfolio management.
As head of "digital" pre-development, he built up a team of software and AI experts and developed prototypes for predictive maintenance, remote service assistance and adaptive planning systems. The conceptualisation of new business models was critical to success. As Head of Strategy and M&A, he played a key role in the IPO of Bystronic AG as well as in strategy development and several investments in technology companies.
His academic career is equally impressive, with stints at the Technical University of Munich, the National University of Singapore, the University of St. Gallen, the University of Cambridge and Harvard Business School. During his doctorate, Bastian researched the topic of frugal and reverse innovation. He is the author of one of the most cited articles in this field, which has become increasingly important due to its link to sustainability and voluntary simplicity.
Bastian's extensive recent publications and research projects provide not only theoretical insights but also practical solutions for organisations in the process of digital transformation.
Current projects focus on human digital transformation, the design of digital ecosystems (data spaces) and learning from failed digital transformation projects. As Professor of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship at Bern University of Applied Sciences, Bastian has launched the Tech Summer School together with other experts. This initiative emphasises his commitment to educating the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs by not only imparting knowledge, but also promoting practical experience and mindsets that are essential for success in today's fast-paced business world.
